Engineering Undergraduate Research Office (EURO) is accepting SURF 2023 project proposals through the EURO web portal. Purdue faculty initiates the project wherein they can approve graduate students and post-doctoral researchers as project managers. Being a research mentor for a SURF student provides an unparalleled mentorship experience. Last year multiple labs at Purdue hosted close to 200 students from Purdue and outside Purdue. If your lab has hosted a SURF student in the past or is willing to host a student this year, kindly initiate a discussion with your professor. The student application portal opens on January 9, 2023; getting the project in sooner is better. Project posting is relatively easy and takes 10-12 minutes to create one.

About the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program:

SURF is an opportunity for undergraduates to gain research experience under a Purdue professor and graduate student's guidance. The program is open to students enrolled at US institutions in a baccalaureate degree program. We aim for the 2023 program to be in person. All professional development programming aspects and the Symposium will be held on campus. The SURF application portal for students will open on January 9, 2023, and close on February 15, 2023.  We request faculty to review SURF applications and request students before March 1, 2023.

SURF Funding Model:

  • SURF stipend: $6000. The SURF funding model splits the cost equally between — the PI, the PI's school/department, and the college of engineering (or whatever college the PI is appointed). Each entity contributes $2000 towards one SURF student.
  • If a PI wishes to recruit more than one student or have more than one project, PI may be responsible for the full stipend for the second student depending on the departmental agreements and available funding from the college.
  • PIs recruiting external students are requested to contribute and additional $1000 towards external student housing costs.

We aim to broaden the research participation across many student populations, including first-generation, low socioeconomic status, and ethnic/racial minorities who desire to pursue an advanced degree please consider this when recruiting students.

SURF 2023 Program Dates:

  • Program Dates: May 22 – August 2, 2023
  • SURF Symposium: July 27-28, 2023
  • SURF Awards Reception: August 1, 2023

We are excited to receive your project proposals. Feel free to reach out to us at eur@purdue.edu with any questions.
