Description
AAMP-EM is a 3-year cooperative research agreement between Purdue’s Energetics Research Center and the Army Research Laboratory. As part of the efforts to provide a talent pipeline to the ARL, AAMP-UP is an experiential education program for undergraduate STEM students. It consists of a 10-week experience involving research in explosives, pyrotechnics, and propellants. AAMP-UP has three main goals:
- Excellent research in cutting edge facilities
- Networking and awareness of the military and the defense industry
- Professional development for young engineers
AAMP-UP students represent a diverse range of genders, ages, home institutions, STEM majors, races, ethnicities, and more. They are embraced in “coming as they are” and making the most out of their research experiences. Typically, 40 AAMP-UP students are assigned to approximately 20 different projects, with 20-30 daily graduate mentors and 10-15 sponsoring faculty members.
We are specifically recruiting graduate assistants to join our AAMP-UP Leadership team. We need help in both the Spring 2023 and Summer 2023 semesters and are open to students who can help for either both or one of the semesters. Students who can fulfill both semesters will be prioritized in the application process. Potential graduate assistant responsibilities might include:
Spring 2023
- Developing graduate mentor training seminar
- Developing technical writing curriculum
- Helping assess and revise student application process
- Helping plan AAMP-UP'23 seminar content and speakers
- Assessing and revising professional development subprogram
- Finalizing AAMP-UP safety subprogram
- Serving as the liaison for graduate student mentors to the AAMP-UP leadership team
Summer 2023
- Delivering graduate mentor training
- Helping with technical writing instruction
- Helping with student on-boarding process
- Running AAMP-UP'23 seminars
- Helping to run professional development events
- Assisting with any safety-related concerns or incidents
- Serving as the liaison for graduate student mentors to the AAMP-up leadership team
- Helping to design and run the annual AAMP-UP Symposium
Benefits
- Half-time graduate administrative/professional assistantship in the School of Engineering Education (20 hrs/week)
- $2,166.67 per month paid on a bi-weekly basis (equivalent to $26k/year)
- Remission of tuition and fees (Spring 2023 students must be enrolled in at least 6 hours of credits, and Summer 2023 students must be enrolled in at least 3 hours of credits)
- Eligibility for University Graduate Student Staff Health Plan, as well as spouse and dependent eligibility
Qualifactions/Requirements
A graduate student who is passionate about helping undergraduate students and maintaining an excellent undergraduate research program. The student will be:
- Willing to regularly attend office hours and stay in communication with their direct supervisor and the AAMP-UP leadership team
- Driven, self-motivated, and precise in deadlines and meeting attendance
- A U.S. citizen or permanent resident willing to undergo export controls training and a background check.
- Enthusiastic and able to interact with a wide range of people
No prior military experience is required. Prior experience as a mentor or as part of an undergraduate research program would be a bonus.

- Adhere to the 20 hours per week when assigning tasks
We are excited about the third year of AAMP-UP and believe in continuous improvement on every level of the program. We prioritize our students’ experiences with AAMP-UP so that they can safely learn and grow while performing research, learning technical writing, and developing themselves as young professionals.
