Emerson Now Accepting Applications for 2024-2025 Discrete Automation Scholarship
Two academic merit award winners will receive financial support and grants for collegiate STEM research and educational programs.
Emerson is inviting U.S. college students pursuing degrees in science, technology and engineering fields to apply for its 2024-2025 Discrete Automation Scholarship. Every year the merit-based award recognizes two ambitious problem solvers with a $5,000 scholarship each, eligibility for an Emerson internship and $1,000 research grants to enhance their schools' engineering programs. Applicants may apply<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.emerson.com%2Fen-us%2Fautomation%2Findustrial-factory-automation%2Fthe-emerson-discrete-automation-scholarship-program&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Cd3ed96a5e8374f73817b08dc6625d90a%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638497560069431159%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=lsSETp20cIvYFHe4ZZgBWozATkpeTvak6DZacK430Ss%3D&reserved=0> through July 31,2024.
Emerson's scholarship rewards individuals pursuing STEM professions in fields such as engineering, instrumentation, systems, and automation that are critical to discrete automation applications. The financial support and recognition provided by the scholarship helps students with great potential emerge as leaders ready to shape their field.
"Empowering the next generation of STEM professionals is not just a commitment, but a mission that Emerson holds at its core," said Andy Duffy, vice president of sales for Emerson's discrete automation business and chairman of the board of the Valve Manufacturers Association of America. "Our Discrete Automation Scholarship symbolizes our dedication to nurturing talented innovators who are poised to lead in technology and engineering fields."
In addition to sponsoring the scholarship program for over a decade, Emerson has also sponsored ground-breaking, student-led projects, and "We Love STEM" events that have reached thousands of students globally.
Only U.S. citizens and legal U.S. residents may apply. Eligible applicants will have completed at least the first year of a bachelor's degree program or are enrolled in a graduate program at an accredited U.S. educational institution of higher learning at the time of application.

This discussion based class covers the fundamentals of leadership through case studies, collaborative ideation, and several industry speakers. If you're currently in a leadership position or looking to get into one, this is a great way to get a head start on building your skills.
The class will be held every Thursday from 3:30 - 4:30 pm and you can add it to your schedule using the CRN 31437 or ENGR 40400!
Industrial Scholarship Application Now Open!
The Purdue Engineering Student Council (PESC) is excited to announce that applications for the Industrial Scholarship are now open! Every year, PESC hosts Industrial Roundtable, which is one of the largest student-run career fairs in the nation. One way that PESC enhances the job fair experience for students is by offering the Industrial Scholarship, which is sponsored by companies participating in the fair.
This is a merit-based scholarship that will be awarded to students who demonstrate a significant commitment to their education and community. It is open to all undergraduate engineering students at Purdue. The judges for the Industrial Scholarship are Purdue professors with experience in various fields, and they will evaluate all applications based on academic merit, volunteer work, and overall quality.
To apply for the Industrial Scholarship, please complete the application<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fforms%2Fd%2Fe%2F1FAIpQLSeLvBsCQCKMZGdZcvR85_PHuLSj7kqtK3nMjidIAxqGf2VvYA%2Fviewform&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Cd3ed96a5e8374f73817b08dc6625d90a%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638497560069431159%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=mIj36bwbZsZ%2FOT43txl5V32Rpn60h4BG9Wt%2F%2F%2FrENFE%3D&reserved=0> by May 31st, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST. MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Sleep and Mental Health
Are you getting the recommended 7 - 9 hours of sleep each night? For many members of our engineering community, the answer to that question is a great big NO.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, 50% of college students report daytime sleepiness and 70% report insufficient sleep. That is a problem as sleep is critical to restoring neural pathways, creating optimal brain health, and promoting mental health and emotional regulation.
Lack of sleep negatively influences mood and emotional reactivity. Sleep deprivation also leads to inattention, irritability, poor impulse control, impaired memory, impaired concentration, and difficulty with decision making, all good reasons for the members of our engineering community to get some sleep!
Ten Tips for Better Sleep
1. Make sleep a priority, not something to sacrifice regularly.
2. Practice good sleep hygiene by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day.
3. Set a relaxing bedtime routine free of electronics. The use of television and mobile devices stimulate rather than relax the brain for sleep.
4. Maintain a bedroom temperature between 60 - 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Cooler sleeping temperatures promote restorative sleep.
5. Limit napping which can negatively impact the ability to fall asleep at bedtime.
6. Exercise regularly. Exercise promotes sound sleep.
7. Avoid caffeine and other stimulants after 2 p.m. Stimulants prevent restful sleep.
8. Skip alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime as these substances commonly cause sleep disruption during the night.
9. Use a fan or other white noise machine to block noise that may prevent restful sleep.
10. Get 30 minutes of daylight daily. Natural light positively impacts your circadian rhythm, helping you establish a healthy sleep pattern.
Still struggling to sleep soundly? Try utilizing a sleep diary<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.pa-foundation.org%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2FNSF-Sleep-Diary.pdf&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Cd3ed96a5e8374f73817b08dc6625d90a%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638497560069587450%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=P7BXFqU9Eb9t3lwEQisjdl1%2F0vXfc5TM42B60ShPjs8%3D&reserved=0> to pinpoint the cause of your restless sleep or speak to your physician about your concerns.
