ENGR 103: Engineering and Public Service
Spring 2024

The College of Engineering is launching a new 1 credit seminar course called Engineering and Public Service for the spring semester. It will take place on Thursdays from 4:30 PM- 5:20 PM. There is a great need for technical know-how within local government, federal government, and government agencies. This course will introduce a wide range of career opportunities for engineers within the public sector, while engaging with guest speakers on interesting topics. Students will build their network and learn about opportunities to develop skills for successful careers impacting U.S. policy. This course will be the gateway for a new certificate program in Innovation and Public Service to be launched in Fall 2024. Students taking this course will have earned credit toward the new certificate program.

Experience German Engineering Maymester
May 13-27, 2024
Berlin, Heidelberg and Karlsruhe, Germany

Students experience German engineering by traveling through Germany and visiting key university and industry partners. This program targets FYE students, especially those considering GEARE. Sophomores and Juniors are also welcome to apply.

Undergraduate Research Experience in Computational Medical Image Analysis

The TIPS (Technological Innovation for Personalized Surgery) Lab led by Dr. Fiona Kolbinger at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering is recruiting a limited number of undergraduate research assistants with a background in (bio-)medicine, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, industrial engineering or related fields in Spring 2024.

Students will get the chance to gain broad experience in clinical applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including the compilation and computational analysis of unique medical datasets such as CT, MRI, endoscopic and laparoscopic imaging as well as structured and unstructured clinical data. Additionally, students will get insights into specific clinical needs and prerequisites for the clinical translation of AI applications in surgery and medicine. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams of undergraduate and graduate researchers to contribute to ongoing projects. They will also participate in group meetings and get experience in journal club and research presentations.

The TIPS Lab is a dynamic, interdisciplinary team of researchers at Purdue University's Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering. We work at the intersection of surgery and data science, aiming to develop clinically valuable computational tools for personalized patient care in surgery. Combining technical knowledge with a clinical perspective on health and disease and an understanding of legal and regulatory requirements, our goal is to drive the clinical translation of novel technologies in the fields of surgery and interventional medicine.

Interested students should get in touch with Dr. Kolbinger directly via the contact form on our website (preferred) or via email (fkolbing at purdue.edu<mailto:fkolbing at purdue.edu>) with a brief description of their academic/research interests and a PDF of their CV. Prior experience in computational data analysis is a plus, but not a requirement.
