Water is a vital resource for all citizens of LaPorte County. Water is essential for agriculture and industry, as well as for recreation and drinking. A healthy environment and economy requires clean water and healthy watersheds. This publication gives basic information about the surface and ground water resources of LaPorte County, and discusses human activities that may be affecting those water resources.

LaPorte County is located in northwest Indiana and has an area of 608 square miles or 389,120 acres. Elevation in the county ranges from 581 feet to 957 feet, and the population in 1990 was 107,066. The LaPorte County climate is temperate, with average monthly temperatures ranging from 24°F in January to 73°F in July.
