2018 American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Sustainable Development Award

Project Title: Development of an Economic Grain Storage System for Rain Season Harvest in Rural Africa (PI: W. Wu and J. Chen)

Awarded to one project that solves a pressing need in a developing country, based on the project’s simplicity of design, its use of local raw materials, and its widespread effect on quality of life in that region. Presented at the 14th Annual Environmental Protection Agency P3 National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington D.C.



Purdue team won the 2018 ASCE Sustainable Development Award at the 12th Annual Environmental Protection Agency P3 National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington D.C.



2016 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) P3 YCOSST Award

Project Title: Development of Distributed Off-grid Wind Energy System for Rural African Communities (PI: J. Chen)

Awarded to two projects that best employs sustainable practices, interdisciplinary collaborations, engineering principles, and youth involvement, and whose design is simple enough to have a sustainable impact without requiring significant technical expertise of its users. Presented at the 12th Annual Environmental Protection Agency P3 National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington D.C. by judges for the AIChE Youth Council on Sustainable Science and Technology (YCOSST).

2014 ASME Robert T. Knapp Award

Paper Title: Uncertainty quantification of the hybrid method for particle field measurement using digital in-line holography (Authors: Gao, J., Chen, J., Guildenbecher, D. R., and Reu, P. L.)


Awarded to one outstanding original paper (within two calendar years prior to the year of the award) resulting directly from analytical or laboratory research, presented to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers under the auspices of the Fluids Engineering Division.
