Academic Integrity: A Guide for Students

Purdue University values intellectual integrity and the highest standards of academic conduct. To be prepared to meet societal needs as leaders and role models, students must be educated in an ethical learning environment that promotes a high standard of honor in scholastic work. Academic dishonesty undermines institutional integrity and threatens the academic fabric of Purdue University. Dishonesty is not an acceptable avenue to success. It diminishes the quality of a Purdue education, which is valued because of Purdue's high academic standards.

Academic Probation and Dismissal

A graduate student is expected to maintain a graduation index representing a B average (3.0/4.0 GPA.) or better. A student's progress will be reviewed each session by the student's department. The student's progress also may be reviewed by the Graduate School. Should the student fail to perform on a level acceptable to the advisory committee, the departmental graduate committee, or the dean of the Graduate School, he or she may be asked to discontinue graduate study at Purdue.

University requirements state that no grade of "D" or "F" is allowed in a course on the plan of study. Any plan of study course in which a grade of "D" or "F" is received must be repeated and completed successfully; it cannot be dropped from the plan of study.

Student Regulations and Procedures

Student Regulations provides information for all Purdue students on the structure, policy, regulations, and procedures of the University that govern their relationship to the University in both academic and personal progress toward their ultimate educational goals. It is designed as a reference, with direct quotations from the University Code where applicable, covering the basic areas relating to all students on the campus.

Attendance and Grief Absence Policy

The University expects that students will attend classes for which they are registered. At times, however, either anticipated or unanticipated absences can occur. The student bears the responsibility of informing the instructor in a timely fashion, when possible. The instructor bears the responsibility of trying to accommodate the student either by excusing the student or allowing the student to make up work, when possible. The University expects both students and their instructors to approach problems with class attendance in a manner that is reasonable.

Purdue University recognizes that a time of bereavement is very difficult for a student. The University therefore provides rights to students facing the loss of a family member through the Grief Absence Policy for Students (GAPS).The information outlined in the academic regulations and policy page lists more details on these important regulations that are overseen by the Registrar's Office.

Grade and Grade Reports (Incomplete Grades)

Incomplete grades are given when an unavoidable event happens which interrupts the completion and does not require the student to retake the course. However, there are strict rules about incomplete grades. Rule B4 on this page specifically addresses incomplete work.

If you would like to appeal a grade, please review Suggestions and Instructions for students and faculty involved in a grade appeal.. You should make every attempt to clear up any confusion with your professor before filing a grade appeal.
