This class will provide construction and design professionals the skills to understand construction loads and their combinations, wind loads and their impacts, timber design, bracing and guying design, vertical forming systems, and shoring analysis for vertical construction.

Learning Objective:
The class objective is to develop an understanding on how to design temporary systems typically used in vertical construction. Upon completion of this course you will be able to: Understand the possible types and magnitudes of loads experienced by temporary structures. Understand and design bracing and guying systems needed and used in vertical construction. Design vertical forming systems Design vertical shoring systems Understand how construction interfaces with design.
Topics Covered:
The course consists of 11 on-line information sessions and various homeworks and quizzes. Topics are: Construction loads - ASCE 37 Wind Loads - ASCE 7 Timber design Bracing and guying design Vertical forming systems design Vertical concrete construction shoring analysis

Homework:
There will be approximately one assignment per week. Students should expect to spend 3-4 hours per week engaging with the lecture videos and completing homework assignments.
Exams:
There will be multiple quizzes in the class that will be submitted online.
Textbooks:
No textbook will be uses. All content will be distributed through the class site.
Computer Requirements:
ProEd Minimum Computer Requirements. We recommend that students have access to a webcam to use for optional virtual office hours using the WebEx platform.
Other Requirements:
Students may wish to have a scientific or graphing calculator to complete course assignments and exams. Access to a printer and a scanner. Students will be required to print their quizzes and scan their completed quizzes into Blackboard.
