What is your current role + duties for CEM?  

As an Assistant Professor in Construction Engineering and Management, my primary mission is to equip the next generation of industry professionals and workforce with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking necessary for success in the construction sector. To achieve this, I am dedicated to integrating cutting-edge teaching methodologies, pioneering research initiatives, and community-engaged service activities into the core of my academic practice. 

What research + projects are you currently working on?

My research laboratory, the Intelligent-Inclusive-Safe Built Environment Lab (I2SAFE), is at the forefront of pioneering advancements in smart safety for both the present and future construction industry. I2SAFE is committed to not only advancing technological integration in construction but also ensuring these innovations serve to create a more inclusive and safe built environment. 

We are leveraging cutting-edge technologies, including Extended Reality (XR), wearable sensing devices, Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and other emerging technologies pivotal to construction automation. Among our diverse projects, one multidisciplinary initiative is dedicated to reshaping the future construction landscape to accommodate seamless integration and collaboration between stakeholders, workers, and robotic systems, facilitated by AI-driven communication.  

What have you learned about being a woman in construction? 

Being a woman in a male-dominated construction industry presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. Being in the construction industry for 17 years, I’ve learned to embrace countless opportunities, not be intimidated if I am the only woman in the room, overcome challenges with resilience and determination, and transform obstacles into stepping stones for growth.

What inspires you about the women in the construction industry?  

What inspires me about women in the construction industry is that they are breaking barriers, building pathways for future generations, inspiring and leading change, and demonstrating invaluable contributions to the industry’s innovation and growth.

What advice do you have for future women in CEM? 

My advice is to confidently embrace your unique perspective and contributions, seek out mentors and build a supportive network, make an impact, never stop learning, and advocate for yourself and others. Remember that you are the BEST! And that our industry needs you to grow and to become more diverse and inclusive.
