ABSTRACT

This presentation is a summary of the proposed research road map for construction in developing countries. It clearly outlines the conceptual framework of the domain along with a review of the historical challenges which have been facing the built environment in developing countries and vision for the future, both for construction industries and the research community. This leads to a review of the research contribution overtime and a development strategy and research agenda for 2022 and beyond. The CIB- W107 Research Roadmap (W107RR) aims to provide authoritative guidance and support for national and international research bodies and funding agencies. The presentation reflects on the following W107RR questions which need to be answered towards a modern and more sustainable developing country’s built environment: Conceptual framework: What are we talking about? This question includes the typical: What are the salient issues facing construction industries in developing countries, how are these interrelated, what influences all of this, who are the stakeholders, what are the relevant areas of expertise, what are the characteristics of relevant systems, processes, and technologies?; State of the art: where are we today? This question includes: state of technology, best practices, international variations, perceived problems and the world’s leading centers of expertise; Future scenario: the stakeholders’ vision is described in this section: Where do we want to be in ten years?; Development strategy: this section includes: What is needed in terms of knowledge, information, tools, concepts and applications to enable the respective systems, processes and technologies to be developed over time?; Research contribution: this section describes how research contributes to the development strategy and what the requirements for research are in order to make that contribution in developing countries; and Research agenda: the Roadmap concludes with the agenda for research within developing countries. This will include areas of science and technology development, required sequences of development, priorities, international cooperation within the research community, cooperation between research and practice

BIO

Prof. P D Rwelamila is a professional project manager and a project procurement systems expert. Until December 2021, he was a Professor of Project Management & Procurement Systems at UNISA – School of Business Leadership & Currently Professor Emeritus of Project Management & Procurement Systems – UNISA-SBL. He has experience of more than 30 years in consulting in construction economics, policy development and conducting studies in project appraisal, construction project planning, procurement, contract formulation and management, project performance evaluation and strategic project management. He has organized and conducted more than 60 continuous professional development courses for construction across countries. He is an author of more than 200 peer reviewed journal and conference proceeding publications, research, and study reports. From 1987 to 1999 he was lecturing at both undergraduate and postgraduate level in construction management and project management that is inclusive of project procurement. From 2000 to-date he has been lecturing at postgraduate and executive level in project management, project procurement and strategic project management. He has been involved in high level assignments in South Africa, Australia and United Kingdom including the development of South African Construction Industry; Re-evaluation of Operations – Shelter Afrique; Development of CPD programmes for Senior Project Managers – at the Dutch Shell Project Management Academy, QUT, Brisbane, Australia; and Review of the Association of Project Managers (APM) thinking on project management body of knowledge – Manchester and APM, UK. Furthermore, he has been involved directly through two South African firms in planning and implementation of PPP projects in South Africa. Until March 2018, Prof. Rwelamila was a non-executive director and board chairman of Msingi Construction Project Management (Pty) Ltd ; and Proceedings Editor, AABD. He has been a consultant to various public and private organizations in South Africa. Rwelamila is also the joint co-coordinator of CIB W107 and past president of South African Council for Project and Construction Management Professions (SACPCMP). Since 1999, he has been a resource person at the Stellenbosch University’s Prestigious Executive Programme for the South African Construction Industry – Construction Management Programme (CMP) in the Department of Civil Engineering.
