LabTA_AI: AI Laboratory Teaching Assistant

LabTA_AI team will develop an AI-powered teaching assistant that helps students troubleshoot engineering laboratory experiments through guided dialogue, pedagogical reasoning, and eventually computer vision. The project aims to improve student learning while reducing routine workload for human teaching assistants through intelligent, context-aware assistance.

Description:

Students often require immediate assistance with common hardware, software, and debugging problems in engineering labs. This project develops an AI Laboratory Teaching Assistant that provides students with guided, pedagogically appropriate support instead of simply providing answers. The system combines large language models with laboratory-specific knowledge to diagnose common problems, ask targeted follow-up questions, recommend troubleshooting steps, and determine when human intervention is needed. Future versions will incorporate computer vision so the assistant can interpret laboratory setups, circuit boards, instrumentation, and other physical systems through camera input. Students participating in this VIP team will work on AI system design, software development, educational technology, multimodal reasoning, human-AI collaboration, and computer vision while creating tools that improve engineering education.

Relevant Technologies:

  • Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI

  • Computer Vision

  • AR-VR / Human-AI Interaction / Educational Technology

Prerequisites:

No prior experience with artificial intelligence is required. Students with interests in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, controls, data science, software engineering, human-computer interaction, or engineering education are encouraged to participate. Experience with Python, software development, electronics, or machine learning is helpful but not required. Students will work in interdisciplinary teams, allowing newcomers to learn alongside more experienced members as the project goes on during multiple semesters.
