Purdue Military Research Institute (PMRI) officers swept two of the three top prizes for best student research presentations at the 25th anniversary CERIAS symposium, held March 28-29, 2023

The Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue is the world's oldest, largest, and preeminent interdisciplinary academic education and research institute for cybersecurity and cyber-physical systems. The center hosts a Security Symposium each year, bringing together experts and leaders from industry, government, and academia. The Symposium also invites student researchers to present their work. Students from Purdue University, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology, University of Notre Dame, Indiana University, and IUPUI orally presented their research in "elevator pitch" format, as well as informally during a 2.5-hour poster session for participants. Faculty members evaluated students on the quality and relevance of their research as well as their presentation skills. Out of 35 participating teams, prizes were awarded to the top three student projects.

Lieutenant Taylor Schorlemmer (U.S. Army) and his labmates from electrical and computer engineering won second place for their project titled "Machine Learning Supply Chain Security." The research involves two studies, characterizing software supply chain problems and then identifying threat models for reuse of pre-trained machine learning models in software engineering supply chains.

Captain Alexander Master (U.S. Army) and Dr. Christina Garman from Purdue's computer science department won third place for their project titled "Investigating Nation-state Internet Censorship Methods." The study involved gathering evidence of Internet censorship from a globally representative sample of 70 countries - during a one-year cross-sectional study period of measurement data as well as historically over the past 20 years.

About CERIAS: Founded in 1998, the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University is the world's foremost multidisciplinary academic research institute addressing research issues of cybersecurity, privacy, resiliency, trusted electronics, autonomy, and explainable artificial intelligence, and related topics.
