Mullite Workpiece LAM of mullite has been successful in removing material without fracturing the workpiece or cutting tool.
  • Semi-continuous chips as long as 15mm in length are generated under certain operating conditions.
  • An uncoated carbide tool is used and preliminary results show excellent tool life.
  • The low thermal conductivity and low thermal shock resistance of mullite require much longer preheat times than for silicon nitride and partially-stabilized zirconia.
