MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Social Media and Mental Health
Many studies have found a direct correlation between high social media use and adverse mental health such as anxiety and depression (Andreassen et al. 2016<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpsycnet.apa.org%2Frecord%2F2016-13379-006&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Ce098f4e6f3f04375219f08dccae60d8e%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638608336633393685%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=wZPwa2kPvik2hPC1gfsFT0vBxto6ghfNXPDSKrt42TU%3D&reserved=0>). 90% of 18-29-year-olds are on social media every day, and they spend an average of 2 hours a day there (Scott et al. 2017<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sciencedirect.com%2Fscience%2Farticle%2Fpii%2FS0747563217303382&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Ce098f4e6f3f04375219f08dccae60d8e%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638608336633393685%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=3hV9EH%2FNsGeQinKTwxgXPJ1e6ZdKoAZ5vtgANz1Qpeo%3D&reserved=0>). More recent research indicates that while 2 hours of usage per day remains the average, some college students spend up to 6 hours per day on social media.
Social media use is here to stay, so how do we combat the mental health risks associated with social media use such as social media addiction, lowered self-esteem, anxiety, and depression? We combat risk by changing the way we use social media. Doing a weekly check in about our social media use can help us be intentional about how we are using our time. Feel like you have no time to spend on things you enjoy? Ask yourself how much time you spend mindlessly scrolling through posts and reels. The answer may provide you with some insight as to how you are spending your free time.
Use these three questions when checking in about your social media use.
* How do you feel after consuming social media? Happy, sad, jealous, amused?
* How can you make your social media use more meaningful? Follow accounts that inspire? Unfollow people that make you feel negative?
* Are you being a positive presence on social media?
Social media can become addictive. When we see something funny, or someone likes our post, our brain releases dopamine. Then when our minds are bored, we tend to quickly turn to our phones to get another dopamine boost. That is why when we look around a lecture hall before class starts, or we are in line getting ready to make a purchase, we see so many others engrossed in their phones. Can you take a break from your phone and become more mindful of your surroundings and engage in a conversation with those around you? Try it! Those activities can give you a dopamine boost as well!
Taking intentional time away from your phone can improve your well-being. Some ideas to implement are intentionally reducing the number of your screen time hours and spending time with friends while leaving your phone in another area. You could also try going to class and leaving your phone in your room or office or turning it off completely, actions which can help you take inventory of how often you are devoting yourself to screen time and how much you depend on it.
If you find yourself struggling to cope with the challenging impacts of social media or struggling with other issues and would like to talk to someone, come in to see the CoE CARES Hub therapist, Jennie Beutler, during daily walk-in "Let's Talk<https://www.purdue.edu/caps/students/workshops/lets-talk.php>" hours, ARMS 1251, Monday through Friday, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. Or schedule an initial brief screening appointment with Jennie here<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdueu-caps.titaniumhwc.com%2FCOE&data=05%7C02%7Cengr-boilerbuzz-list%40ecn.purdue.edu%7Ce098f4e6f3f04375219f08dccae60d8e%7C4130bd397c53419cb1e58758d6d63f21%7C0%7C0%7C638608336633393685%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&sdata=jiPuEqFmW9%2Be%2FqyGAqEm31boamTPZOv4TtRyspQXdGo%3D&reserved=0>.
