12/02/2010, 5PM, GRIS 276“Why didn't you speak up? Organizational Factors in Accident Causation”
Technical Meeting
We are honored to have invited Prof. Karen Marais from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics to give us a talk about her work on "system of systems" at 5:00pm, GRIS 276, on Dec 2, 2010. The title of her talk is "Why didn't you speak up? Organizational Factors in Accident Causation". The perspectives of "system of systems" is gaining increased emphasis in industrial and systems engineering and Prof. Marais's talk should be interesting to students across disciplines.
11/05/2010“IE Research Symposium”
Symposium
Our chapter is co-organizing an IE Research Symposium initiated by IE Graduate Student Organization (GSO). This exiting event is upcoming on this Friday (Nov 5th), starting at 8 am with opening keynote remarks by Ms Erin Youngs, VP of Walt Disney, and concluding at 12:00 pm with closing keynote remarks by Mr. Craig Hall, President of Lee Shore Enterprise Ltd. Both Ms Youngs and Mr. Hall are newly honored Outstanding Industrial Engineers (OIEs) of Class 2010. In between, we will have more than 15 research presentations and posters by fellow IE researchers. Among them, 2 presentations are from Prof. Caldwell and Prof. Yi in Human Factors, and four posters from Human Factors research labs. Refreshments will be provided, and lunch with the entire Class 2010 OIEs will be held right after all presentations. Complete schedule (updated by now) of this event is attached in this email. It will be a great opportunity for you to network with other IE or Human Factors researchers and practitioners during the symposium, and do not miss the free food. Looking forward to seeing you guys there!
10/31/2010“Design Competition”
The Third HFES-SIGGRAPH Campus-wide Web Design Competition
To celebrate the National Ergonomics Month 2010, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and SIGGRAPH are hosting a web design competition together. For those interested, you have until Oct. 31 to create design and create a website. It can be of any content (Use your best judgment here), and we will be evaluating design, creativity, functionality, and interface. So we want a website that looks good just as much one that works well!
The top prize for this competition is $100 for first place, $50 for two runner ups. You can submit your name, contact, and URL for the site to
Here. Good luck to everyone who enters. Winners will be announced at a November meeting.
11/19/2010, 11:30 am, SIML Main Entrance“Field Trip”
To the Simulator Facility in the Dept. of Aviation Technology at Purdue Airport
Aviation is currently a very hot research domain in Human Factors. To further the appreciation and understanding of aviation human factors, our chapter plans to organize a field trip to the Simulator Facility in the Dept. of Aviation Technology at Purdue Airport. We are going to meet at the main entrance of SIML Building (Holleman-Niswonger Simulator Center) at 11:30am, 11/05/2010 (Friday). SIML is to the west of NISW, the main building for the Dept. of Aviation Technology. It will surely be a precious opportunity for you to learn how simulation technology is used in aviation and experience it in person, and you definitely do not wan to miss it. This field trip is free for our student members, and it cost hundreds of dollars if you want to visit and run the simulator alone.
The noon time on Fridays is the only time that the simulator will be free, and I apologize if this would conflict with your IE/Psy577 class. Yet, we are not able to schedule it at other time. We need to estimate the attendance of this event and please sign up for it if you are interested in by providing your basic information at
here.
Thanks and have a wonderful week.
