Why are there different types of talks offered at the Grad WiE Network Symposium?
While you might not see some of these types of talks at your next conference, each type of talk offers presenters an opportunity to practice a specific communication skill. For example, a Pecha Kucha talk offers the presenter an opportunity to talk about their research in a concise way and how their ideas can be represented in figures, rather than text on a slide.
Can I see examples of previous talks?
The presentations at previous symposia are not recorded, so you cannot see examples from previous presenters. However, we encourage you to do an online search to find similar presentations online should you like inspiration. For example, Pecha Kucha is a widely known presentation style, and many examples exist on YouTube. If you’d like more information about the details of how to prepare for your talk type (requirements, timing, etc.) please see the “Call for Abstracts” and your abstract acceptance email.
How do I know which presentation style I am presenting?
In the email that notified you of your abstract’s acceptance, you will also find the type of talk that you were selected to present. Please find details about the talk type in the “Call for Abstracts” that is located on the Grad WiE Network website.
What if I don’t get my first choice of talk type?
We try to accommodate everyone’s first choice of presentation style; however, there are certain cases where you may not get your first choice. Being accepted for a talk style other than your first choice could be due to your abstract fitting better in another style or due to scheduling. If you have issues with the type of presentation you are accepted to present, feel free to email the Grad WiE Network Leadership Team at wiepgwen@purdue.edu.
