Grad WiE Network: Annual Symposium

Frequently Asked Questions - Abstracts

  1. What needs to be included in my abstract?
    • Your abstract should describe information about your research that is understandable to a multidisciplinary audience who may not be familiar with the intricate details of your area of study. In general, your abstract should include information about relevant literature that motivated your study, the method you used to address your research questions, your findings (to date) and the implications of your work. Most importantly, communicate to your audience why your work is relevant and important.

  2. How long does my abstract need to be?
    • Your abstract should be 250 - 400 words.

  3. When is my abstract due?

  4. When will I find out if my abstract is accepted?
    • You will receive an email from Suzanne Zurn-Birkhimer, PhD, on or before Nov. 12, 2025, notifying you whether your abstract has been accepted. This email will include what type of presentation you are presenting at the Symposium and the time of your talk. Please see the “Call for Abstracts” for the different types of talks and their parameters.

  5. My abstract is accepted … yay! What comes next?
    • In the email notifying you of your abstract’s acceptance, you will find the type of talk that you were selected to give at the Symposium. That email also details what that type of talk should include. You need to 1) register for the Symposium by the date found in that email and 2) complete your presentation by the weekend before the Symposium.

  6. What if I don’t get my first choice of presentation style?
    • We try to accommodate everyone’s first choice of presentation style; however, there are certain cases in which you may not get your first choice. Being accepted for a talk style other than your first choice could be due to your abstract fitting better in another style or due to scheduling. If you have issues with the type of presentation you are accepted to present, feel free to email the Grad WiE Network Leadership Team at wiepgwen@purdue.edu.

  7. What if I have a question not listed on the FAQ?
    • Contact the Grad WiE Network Leadership Team at wiepgwen@purdue.edu or email your session moderator once those have been assigned. You will receive an email in mid-January with information about your session moderator and session time.
