First-year students majoring in engineering can apply to live within the Women in Engineering Learning Community in West Lafayette. This community has typically been housed in Meredith South Hall. All WiE Learning Community residents are automatically enrolled in ENGR 19400 (add link) Women in Engineering Seminar. This one-credit course is where you will learn strategies for success in Purdue Engineering, along with professional development tips. You will hear from dynamic engineering alums who talk about their career choices, on-the-job routines, and challenges and successes in their professional and personal lives.

Since engineering students share a common first-year curriculum, the students on the engineering floors are easily able to form study groups and social networks. Many of the resident assistants assigned to the engineering floors are engineering students and are able to relate to the residents academically as well as socially. In addition, the WiE-WISP (Women in Science Program) tutoring center is located in nearby Shreve Hall for convenience.

Residents of the WiE Learning Community also have the opportunity to participate in monthly ‘Eats & Exploration’ events. Grab some food, build your community, talk with upperclass students about their engineering major, and do some fun activities. Each semester, the WiE LC also takes day-long trips to learn about the impact of engineering. Past visits have included a tour of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and an engineer’s tour of the architecture of downtown Chicago.

We strongly encourage WiE residential community participants to also participate in other Women in Engineering programs, such as the WiE Mentees & Mentors Program (M&M). Set yourself up for success. Research shows that students who participate in the WiE Learning Community and another WiE program tend to graduate from Purdue Engineering at higher rates than those who choose not to participate. Participate in WiE and set yourself up for success.
