"Lessons Learned on the Journey to Becoming an Engineering Leader in Academia"

Abstract: Engineers are trained to solve problems. In addition to solving the world's technological and societal challenges, engineers are often called upon to be leaders in industry, academia, and government. There is not a specific path to engineering leadership roles in academia, but starting by navigating a tenure-track faculty position is a common route. Oftentimes when we see a person who may have achieved some success in life, we do not stop to think about their journey to get to where they are. Therefore, it is important for those of us in leadership to share our personal experiences. In this talk, I will share my journey to leadership, the lessons learned along the way, and discuss how simply being a leader in academia places me in a unique position to inspire students.

"Why on Earth Would You Want to Be a Professor?" (Reflections and Strategies for Building a Purpose-Driven Academic Career)

Abstract: Each year, some of the most talented PhD graduates and postdocs begin preparing for the transition into faculty roles. The focus often falls on what to do—crafting the strongest application, landing the best possible position. But too rarely do we stop to ask the most foundational question: Why do I want to be a faculty member?

In this session, I'll offer a perspective shaped by decades in academia—as a faculty member, mentor, and as a dean of a College of Science and Engineering. We'll explore the “Why” behind pursuing an academic career, not just at the beginning, but throughout the stages of launching, growing, and sustaining a meaningful faculty journey. We'll reflect on how purpose connects with the core pillars of academic life: teaching, research, and service.

I'll also shift the lens to the institutional level. Understanding why universities invest in certain programs, pursue particular goals, or structure positions in specific ways can help early-career faculty align their efforts with institutional priorities—and thrive within them.

Alongside these reflections, I'll share actionable strategies for navigating the What and the How of building a successful faculty career. The session will close with open time for Q&A and discussion.
