Every school within the College of Engineering has its own study abroad website to help you find programs. These programs are divided into the time frame that you wish to study abroad; spring break, Maymester, semester, or year-long programs might all be options. Some schools even have exact plans of studies and programs that you follow to go abroad! The general Purdue University study abroad website has a filtered search that can help you find the right program for you as well. This search can be based on time frame, college, and region of the world you want to visit.
When debating which study abroad experience is right for you, it’s important to consider things like the number of classes you’ll take abroad, whether or not you’ll take them for a grade or pass/fail, how the timing of semesters impacts your summer internships, and whether or not the program you want to be a part of is approved of by your college. Shivali Rao’s Steps for Preparing for Your Trip
Shivali is a member of PSEF who has studied abroad and these are some of the things she learned throughout her process of studying abroad.
- Tell your advisor(s) early!
- Plan for courses offered abroad and what you can move around while you’re on campus at Purdue.
- Take a one-credit seminar class for the region of the world you’re planning on studying in.
- Meet with your study abroad advisor to discuss the classes you’re taking abroad and making sure credit transfers properly.
- Attend a pre-departure meeting with students who have traveled to the place you’re studying in before. Here you’ll learn about things such as money, cell phones, and the first few days abroad.
- Look into scholarships that are available for studying abroad. The university study abroad office is a good place to start!
- Find transportation to get to your school abroad (this cost is not included in the cost of study abroad programs).
