What is Apex?
Apex is an annual, full day event for high school students interested in engineering. This event has been running for over 20 years, and is an important PSEF tradition. During Apex, students participate in engineering challenges, hear from accredited industry speakers, and participate in a student panel to learn more about what life as an engineering student is like.
Apex’s Activity Fair will take place April 5th, 2024.

Environmental Sustainability:
Every year, engineering APEX takes on a new theme. In the past we have themed our event and its activities to focus on space, roller coasters, boats, and more. This year, we are excited to present Environmental Sustainability as the theme for APEX! As our world continues to innovate and excel, many engineers are focusing on creating solutions that are considerate of the environment. In fact, here at Purdue we have our own Environmental and Ecological Engineering program for those who are passionate about the environment! Participants of our 2024 APEX can expect to hear from speakers who are passionate about the environment, take part in activities that imitate sustainability on large scales, and learn about different ways to be environmentally friendly as an engineer.

Dr. Lindsey Payne:
Dr. Lindsey Payne serves as Director of Service Learning and Assistant Professor of Practice at Purdue’s School of Environmental and Ecological Engineering. She has extensive research experience in various aspects of environmental sustainability, including community engagement in climate action planning and environmental policy on a local level. Dr. Payne has received many awards as an educator, including the Society of Environmental and Ecological Engineers Instructional Excellence Awards in both 2022 and 2019. Throughout her career, she strives to help her students be more sustainably minded, “not just applying technical expertise, but activating their sense of civic agency as well.”
Dr. John Mulrow
Dr. John Mulrow is a visiting assistant professor in Purdue’s School of Environmental and Ecological Engineering. His research focuses on how sustainability can be better entwined with our existing energy and infrastructure, and the policy changes needed to accomplish that goal. He also curates a webcomic about emerging technology and sustainability and its connection to sustainability.
