Elena Parial Presents Hybrid Additive Manufacturing Research at ICSP15
Elena S. Parial presented her research on hybrid additive manufacturing of polymers at the 15th International Conference on Shot Peening (ICSP15), hosted by Purdue University from September 22–25, 2025. ICSP brings together researchers and industry experts focused on shot peening, surface engineering, and related manufacturing technologies.
Parial’s presentation, “Hybrid Additive Manufacturing of Polylactic Acid by Fused Filament Fabrication and Shot Peening,” was co-authored with Michael P. Sealy of Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering. Her work explored how shot peening can be integrated with fused filament fabrication to modify and improve the performance of additively manufactured polylactic acid, extending hybrid manufacturing concepts beyond metals and into polymer systems.
The presentation highlighted the broader potential of combining additive manufacturing with post-processing and surface treatment strategies to tailor material performance. Parial completed both her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University and has continued her interest in additive manufacturing and medical technologies in industry. She is now a Quality Engineer at Zimmer Biomet, where her background in research, manufacturing, and medical devices supports her work in the medical technology sector.
Her participation in ICSP15 also marked a fitting connection between Purdue research and an international conference hosted on campus, providing an opportunity to share emerging work in hybrid polymer additive manufacturing with the global surface engineering community.
