Will OPP find me a co-op position?
It is the student’s responsibility to find a co-op position; OPP does not do placements. We have TAs who can help offer guidance for students to look for positions, and you can search X Engine for job postings and apply directly.
I have a housing contract with Purdue, but got a co-op offer; is there anything I can do? How can I secure housing for the next semester when I return?
In our experience, housing has been gracious in relieving students of their contracts because co-op is an academic experience. You can let them know of your status, and they will share a timeline for availability for fall/spring. Email at newres@purdue.edu. You may also explore off-campus housing. Ashley Darnell is a resource and can be reached at adarnel@purdue.edu.
Can I co-op for a company that isn’t listed on the website?
If you are interested in a co-op rotation with a company not in X Engine, connect us with the hiring manager. We can meet with them and the co-op coordinator to ensure they understand Purdue’s requirements and get them listed as an employer partner.
I got a co-op offer, now what?
Congrats! Connect with your co-op coordinator. They will advise you on academic plans and ensure you are on track for your program requirements. Academic Co-op Coordinators are listed on www.opp.purdue.edu.
What projects will I work on?
This depends on your company and role. Talk to your hiring supervisor in advance to understand expectations.
Will I be paid?
Co-op students are typically paid. You can ask employers about compensation. On average, students earn about $3,800 per month.
Will I graduate on time?
Most co-op students graduate within five years. Some finish in 4.5 years, depending on the academic plan and rotations.
How many co-op students will I work with?
This varies by company. Some have 2–4 students, while larger companies may have 50+ co-op students.
How do I find housing?
Ask your supervisor for the contacts of other students or alumni. You can also connect with Professional Practice Ambassadors for advice.
Can I take classes online while on co-op rotation?
We recommend no more than one 3-credit online course. Talk to your co-op coordinator before registering.
Do I get credit for completing a co-op?
Students enroll in a 0-credit co-op course with required deliverables. A co-op certificate may be earned upon completion of rotations. See www.opp.purdue.edu for details.
How do I connect with other students who have done co-op?
Answer not provided.
How does Co-op affect financial aid/scholarships?
Can international students participate in co-op?
Yes. Due to CPT/OPT regulations, students are encouraged to wait until after their sophomore year to maximize work eligibility.
Can international students work on-campus and do co-op?
Yes. On-campus work (20 hours/week) does not count toward CPT. CPT is used for off-campus co-op/internships in your field of study.
What is PPA and how can I join?
Professional Practice Ambassadors (PPA) is a community of co-op students that promotes the program. Join the PPA callout each semester or follow @purdue_ppa.
