Multi-modal Robust Monitoring of Machining Processes

Our multi-modal robust and intelligent monitoring scheme for turning processes includes the following features:

A feature normalization scheme to remove features’ dependence on cutting conditions

A systematic feature selection scheme to select optimal feature sets

Type-2 fuzzy basis function network used to predict tool wear with uncertainty bounds

A reliable tool change alerting system to prevent premature tool failure

Support vector machines used to detect chatter and tool chipping
