ABSTRACT
Compared to slurry rheology and sintering mechanics, binder burnout is not as well understood and is often not characterized in publications focused on ceramic additive manufacturing (AM) beyond thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) or similar techniques. Several efforts have been made since the early ‘80s to decipher aspects of the burnout process, such as the influence of ceramic oxide surface, but much still remains in the dark. This is compounded by the limited usefulness of non-ceramic AM publications – thermal degradation of polymers, flow through a porous medium, etc. – which typically do not cover the full temperature range of burnout. The lack of data has made it difficult to construct working models of binder burnout, and the existing ones tend to make several limiting assumptions or focus on a specific result. This review focuses on the existing literature related to the chemistry of binder burnout for ceramic green bodies printed by digital light projection (DLP), and can be broadly organized to cover resin selection, polymer degradation, ceramic interactions, and models of binder burnout.
