Historically, engineering education has been built on fossil-based power systems, reflecting the sources that have long fueled global growth. But the world is changing rapidly. Our graduates must now be prepared to design, operate, and manage complex, integrated energy systems that draw on a diverse set of resources and technologies. Purdue's approach equips them to do exactly that-by combining technical depth with interdisciplinary insight and a strong understanding of industrial and economic contexts.

However, the landscape is changing. We need to prepare our students - and reskill our alumni - to lead as sociotechnical engineers in the new energy economy. To address this, the College of Engineering is committed to revolutionizing our educational offerings.

Realizing the Vision:

To ensure that Purdue remains at the forefront of workforce and professional education in the energy sector, IEI will coordinate with faculty and schools to expand professional and online learning opportunities in emerging energy fields.

  • Professional Master's Program in Energy Engineering: A new degree program designed for working professionals, combining on-campus experiences with a strong online component, focused on modern energy systems, industrial heat, storage, and power infrastructure.
  • Professional Certificates in Critical Materials: Short, online programs providing specialized knowledge in materials supply chains - from mining and processing to advanced manufacturing applications.
  • Curriculum Innovation: IEI will help faculty pivot existing courses, design new ones, and align offerings with workforce needs identified by industry and government partners.

IEI's workforce strategy begins with one simple question:
What specific job roles will be needed in new technologies related to energy, and what skills are required for each?

From this foundation, IEI collaborates with Indiana's universities, community colleges, and trade schools to build and scale programs that prepare Hoosiers for high-value roles across the energy industry. The goal is to help retrain workers into higher-paying, technology-enabled careers, supporting both regional and national economic growth.
