Education

Working to achieve innovative energy solutions and energy security for all people by inspiring engineers and scientists to increase the U.S. energy supply.

Empowering Future Leaders in Engineering and Science to Pioneer the Next Era of Energy Innovation

The global demand for reliable and abundant energy is reshaping how we educate the next generation of engineers and scientists. At Purdue, we recognize that meeting this challenge requires new ways of teaching, learning, and collaborating. The Institute for Energy Innovation (IEI) prepares students to lead across industries that depend on energy-manufacturing, transportation, power generation, and advanced materials-while driving technological progress that sustains economic vitality in Indiana and beyond.

Historically, engineering education has been built on fossil-based power systems, reflecting the sources that have long fueled global growth. But the world is changing rapidly. Our graduates must now be prepared to design, operate, and manage complex, integrated energy systems that draw on a diverse set of resources and technologies. Purdue's approach equips them to do exactly that-by combining technical depth with interdisciplinary insight and a strong understanding of industrial and economic contexts.

However, the landscape is changing. We need to prepare our students - and reskill our alumni - to lead as sociotechnical engineers in the new energy economy. To address this, the College of Engineering is committed to revolutionizing our educational offerings.

OUR GOALS:

  • Develop future leaders who are not only technically proficient but also skilled in addressing the interconnected challenges of energy supply, manufacturing, and policy.
  • Advance engineering and economic thinking that links research and education to the broader goal of strengthening U.S. energy availability and domestic supply chains.
  • Empower lifelong learners by providing opportunities for students and alumni to reskill and upskill in partnership with industry.

OUR APPROACH:

  • Systems Engineering Mindset: Training students to think across scales-from molecules to megawatts-by applying modeling, data analytics, and AI to optimize complex energy networks.
  • Integration of Research and Education: Embedding real industrial challenges into coursework and student projects to align academic preparation with workforce needs.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Engaging multiple engineering disciplines, economics, and policy to cultivate a holistic view of the energy ecosystem.

REALIZING THE VISION:

To ensure that Purdue remains at the forefront of workforce and professional education in the energy sector, IEI will coordinate with faculty and schools to expand professional and online learning opportunities in emerging energy fields.

  • Professional Master's Program in Energy Engineering: A new degree program designed for working professionals, combining on-campus experiences with a strong online component, focused on modern energy systems, industrial heat, storage, and power infrastructure.
  • Professional Certificates in Critical Materials: Short, online programs providing specialized knowledge in materials supply chains - from mining and processing to advanced manufacturing applications.
  • Curriculum Innovation: IEI will help faculty pivot existing courses, design new ones, and align offerings with workforce needs identified by industry and government partners.

IEI's workforce strategy begins with one simple question:
What specific job roles will be needed in new technologies related to energy, and what skills are required for each?

From this foundation, IEI collaborates with Indiana's universities, community colleges, and trade schools to build and scale programs that prepare Hoosiers for high-value roles across the energy industry. The goal is to help retrain workers into higher-paying, technology-enabled careers, supporting both regional and national economic growth.

By integrating academic innovation, workforce development, and industry collaboration, IEI is ensuring that Purdue graduates - and Indiana's broader workforce - are ready to power the next era of American energy leadership.

At Purdue's Institute for Energy Innovation, we are not just educating engineers - we are preparing innovators who will ensure a plentiful, affordable, and reliable energy future for the nation.
