Designing Behaviorally-Intelligent Robots: Modeling Human Affect, Interactions, and Collaborations
Abstract:
In this talk, we’ll give you a detailed look into the practical research and development happening at IDEAS Lab at Purdue, where our focus is developing user-friendly, human-centered technologies in AI and Robotics. We’ve developed effective algorithms in motion planning and prediction to make sure robots can work well in human environments, improving cooperation and interaction between people and machines. Our team has been working hard on creating models that understand human behavior and activities, providing smart, contextual responses that meet human needs, preferences, and ensure safety. Our range of technological solutions is broad, including visual models for understanding humans, multi-agent robotic collaborations, and applications driven by human emotion, particularly in healthcare. We’re addressing challenges related to efficient communication and collaboration among different entities in complicated environments, concentrating on interpreting human behavior accurately and providing smart, relevant responses. This approach leads to the creation of AI systems that are responsive and in sync with human needs, improving user experience and safety in various settings. We’ve applied our solutions to a variety of challenges, from military operations to industrial processes, proving the practicality and applicability of our developments.
Speaker:
Dr. Aniket Bera is an Associate Professor at the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University. He directs the interdisciplinary research lab IDEAS (ideas.cs.purdue.edu, Intelligent Design for Empathetic and Augmented Systems) at Purdue, working on modeling the "human" and "social" aspects using AI in Robotics, Graphics, and Vision. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Maryland at College Park. Prior to this, he was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Ph.D. in 2017 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also the founder of Project Dost (https://dost.cs.umd.edu/). He is currently serving as the Senior Editor for IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L) in the area of "Planning and Simulation" and the Conference Chair for the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference on Motion, Interaction and Games (MIG 2022).
