Developing Sustainable Shared Mobility -- Systematic Modeling and Assessment
Abstract:
Transportation plays a vital role for people to access essential services such as education, healthcare, food, and employment opportunities. However, current urban transportation systems are grappling with significant challenges in achieving sustainable development, especially to reduce its high energy consumption and carbon emissions. With the advancement of information and communication technologies, shared mobility systems — including shared bikes/e-scooters, electric vehicles, ride-hailing, and ride pooling services — have seen rapid global expansion. These systems are increasingly viewed as crucial in reducing the carbon footprint of urban transportation. Nonetheless, assessing the actual carbon reduction potential of shared mobility requires comprehensive, systematic research. Such research must consider these systems' entire life cycle and integrate them with other urban transportation modes. This presentation will discuss the modeling frameworks and results of various shared transportation systems and provide strategic recommendations for developing and operating shared intelligent transportation systems.
Speaker:
Dr. Hua Cai is an Associate Professor at Purdue University. She holds a joint appointment in Industrial Engineering and Environmental and Ecological Engineering. Her research interests include data-driven system modeling and optimization, environmental implications of emerging technologies, the sustainability of the internet-of-things, complex adaptive systems, and decision making for sustainable consumptions. Specifically, her research has focused on the environmental impacts of shared mobility and micromobility, autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, and infrastructure optimization to support the mixed adoption of these emerging transportation technologies and inform the development of intelligent transportation system.
Dr. Cai received the US National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award in 2020. Currently, she is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cleaner Production and serves on the Editorial Board for Transportation Research Part D: Transport and Environment. Dr. Cai is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.). She received her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, M.S. from the Pennsylvania State University, and B.E. from Tsinghua University.
