Worker-Autonomy Trust and Teaming in Future Construction

Abstract:

Autonomous agents are increasingly becoming construction workers’ teammates, making them an integral part of tomorrow’s construction industry. While many expect worker-autonomy teaming will enhance construction efficiency, the presence of auto-agents, or robots necessitates an appropriate level of trust-building between workers and their autonomous counterparts, especially since these auto-agents’ perfection still cannot be guaranteed. Although researchers have widely explored human-autonomy trust in various domains—such as manufacturing and the military—discussion of this teaming dynamic within the construction sector is still nascent. To extend future occupational opportunities for people with different abilities and disabilities, our research team built an AI-driven platform that translates non-invasive biomechanical and psychophysiological metrics into information AI systems that can assess, model, and leverage to improve worker-machine teaming and trust. This platform will serve as the foundational proof of concept for broadly distributing AI teammates in construction workplaces to support employment opportunities and safety outcomes for construction workers with varying abilities.

Speaker:

Sogand Hasanzadeh, Ph.D. is a director of the Intelligent-Inclusive-Safe (I2SAFE) lab and an Assistant Professor at the Lyles School of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University. She received Ph.D. from Virginia Tech in Civil Engineering, and two M.Sc. in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Shahid Beheshti University, Iran.  Her research focuses on advancing smart construction safety and building smart communities through the application of cyber-physical-human systems, human factor, wearable sensors, VR/AR/MR/XR, robotics, and AI. Her interdisciplinary work is looking for creating a shared language between civil engineering, data science, computer science, human factor, and cognitive/behavioral psychology that leads to more informed engineering solutions in response to the current and future challenges in complex construction projects. Her research studies are sponsored by NSF, several DOTs, construction companies, and the Electri International. Her work also has repeatedly been recognized nationally and internationally.
