Convex Stability and Distributed Actuation and Sensing are Emerging Technologies for Autonomous Systems with Applications

Abstract:

This Seminar presentation first gives a general overview of the current research methods and practice in the Control Systems and Signal Processing Field using eigenvalue methods which are exponential stability based. Then we introduce the new and innovative Toolbox labeled as RES Control Systems and Signal Processing Toolbox (RES CSSP Toolbox) developed by Yedavalli’s startup firm Robust Engineering Systems, LLC in which new and novel concepts such as Convex Stability, Distributed Actuation and Sensing are introduced. The new Convex Stability concept serves as a superset concept in which the current literature exponential stability-based state variable convergence methods such as Hurwitz stability, Lyapunov stability, Schur stability, and Qualitative Sign stability become special cases. Convex Stability concept does not use eigenvalues at all and instead uses `always real’ indices called Convex Stability Indices. It turns out that using the Convex Stability concept (without using eigenvalues), RES CSSP Toolbox algorithms solved the long-standing unsolved problem of Static Output Feedback (SOF) stabilization problem. These emerging and promising algorithms offer significant benefits over the current literature concepts by forging both Qualitative concepts and Quantitative concepts together to achieve higher levels of performance and robustness in autonomous systems.

Speaker:

Dr. Rama K. Yedavalli received his Ph.D. in Dynamics and Control from Purdue University’s School of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1981, after earning his B.E. and M.E. from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. He later returned to IISc as the Satish Dhawan Chaired Professor, receiving the Distinguished Alumnus Award (2009), Platinum Jubilee Award, and Satish Dhawan Visiting Chair (2017–18). A Fellow of IEEE, ASME, and AAAS, and an Associate Fellow of AIAA, Dr. Yedavalli received the O. Hugo Schuck Best Paper Award (2001) and the Lumley Research Award (2002). He has published nearly 200 journal, book chapter, and conference papers, along with three textbooks: Robust Control of Uncertain Dynamic Systems (Springer, 2014), Flight Dynamics and Control of Aero and Space Vehicles (Wiley, 2020), and an upcoming AIAA volume on the Convex Stability Approach (2025). He is an Academy Professor at The Ohio State University and President & CEO of Robust Engineering Systems, LLC, which holds the patent for part of this seminar.
