Breathing Life Into Robots
Abstract:
Thinking about a career in robotics? We live in an exciting time where the promise of robotics is finally becoming a reality. With each year robots are entering new aspects of our everyday lives, from cleaning our homes to neighborhood taxi pick-ups. Within this world I am passionate that robots should adapt to humans and society rather than the reverse. In this talk, I will skip through my career sharing what we have learned about robots/automation and human interaction. Both the hard and fun lessons.I will share perspectives on our opportunities and paint a small picture of a compelling future.
Speaker:
A passionate roboticist, Paul Schmitt is a Senior Manager of Autonomy Software Systems and Safety at Torc Robotics and is a recognized INCOSE Certified Systems Engineer Professional.Paul has 20+ years experience in robotics and autonomous driving at Ford, Volvo, iRobot, Motional, and Torc Robotics.Paul’s research teams have published 12 research papers at global robotics and automation conferences advancing robot and human interaction. His most recent publication this year is on a groundbreaking approach to machine learning in safety critical applications. Paul has 14 patents on automotive safety, home robotics, and autonomous driving systems. He has been an honored guest at the White House for round table discussions on the future of autonomous vehicles.Paul earned a MSME with a Master’s Thesis on a novel path planner for non-holonomic mobile robots at Georgia Tech.Paul also earned an MBA and BSME from Georgia Tech.Paul enjoys mentoring robotic and AI start-ups at MassRobotics, and coaching First Lego League robotics teams.
