Manipulated videos, audio and images have been around for years, but the rise of artificial intelligence and advanced editing software have made them much harder to spot. It’s a dangerous new world, where our very sense of reality can be thrown into doubt.

Edward J. Delp, a professor at the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been studying media forensics for 25 years. He says wider access to AI software and advanced editing tools means almost anyone can create fake content. And it doesn’t need to be sophisticated to be effective.
