Luis Montero Moguel

Luis Montero Moguel earned his bachelor's degree in 2002 in mechanical engineering from the Technological Institute of Merida and his master's degree in mathematics education in 2020 from the University of Guadalajara, both in Mexico. He anticipates graduating in summer 2025 from The University of Texas San Antonio with his PhD in interdisciplinary learning and teaching with a specialization in engineering education. His dissertation applies Epistemic Network Analysis and mathematic modeling in his study of the disconnect students perceive between the concepts taught in traditional engineering courses and real-world problems engineers face in their careers. He proposes that engineering education programs provide opportunities, starting with freshmen, to engage more directly with communities to address common problems and jointly find real and effective solutions — especially in more vulnerable populations. He is a graduate research assistant in three federally funded grants, all of which have a focus on broadening participation in engineering education and research opportunities. Also, he was selected from the 14 institutions that make up the UT system for the 2024-25 Jess Hay Endowment for Chancellor's Graduate Student Research Fellowship. His primary goal is to expand access to high quality education while fostering the integration of disciplinary and societal knowledge. Moguel's interest in this area stems from his 18 years as an engineer, academic teaching, and nonprofit work with low-income communities. As a future professor, he is dedicated to making every class and learning experience as meaningful as possible.
