Ashley Green

Ashley Green earned her bachelor's degree in environmental engineering in 2020 from California Polytechnic State University and her master's degree in civil and environmental engineering (CEE) in 2022 from the University of California Irvine, where she is set to graduate in summer 2025 with her PhD in CEE. Her dissertation broadly explores wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) and the advancement of standardized methods and optimized practices in the field. From sampling at centralized facilities in Los Angeles to serving as the project manager for a large-scale community COVID-19 surveillance initiative at UC Irvine, she has collaborated with a diverse range of stakeholders to conduct wastewater monitoring. She published a paper about this work in Environmental Engineering Science that received honorable mention as one of the most impactful of 2023. Her future goal is to establish a program based on pandemic preparedness, people-first engineering, and participatory-based research, and she hopes to develop a surveillance program for respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, influenza, and RSV — with a focus on vulnerable, urban communities. Green's experience as a fellow in the California Community College Internship Program has reinforced her commitment to supporting diverse student populations and preparing them for meaningful engineering careers. She believes problem-based learning is crucial, and as a professor, she will integrate it into her teaching by emphasizing community-centered design and the lived experiences of those impacted by engineering decisions.
