Ayokunle (Ayo) Olanrewaju earned his BSc in electrical engineering in 2008 and his MSc in biomedical engineering, both from the University of Alberta, Canada. In 2017, he received his PhD in biological and biomedical engineering from McGill University, Canada. He is an acting assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Washington (UW), where he is a member of the Center for AIDS Research and the Institute for Translational Health Sciences and previously served as a postdoctoral fellow in mechanical engineering. He also held an industrial postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University & Sensoreal Inc. He is the recipient of the New Investigator Award (2020-2022) and has three patents pending. He has volunteered with the Edmonton (Canada) Immigrant Services Association and has served as a research mentor for 13 students, seven of whom were from historically underrepresented backgrounds in science and engineering. He is a founding member of the UW Postdoc Diversity Alliance, which provides a community for postdocs from historically underrepresented backgrounds. As a participant in the Science Teaching Experience Program (STEP) for postdocs at UW, he co-designed and taught the course “Diseases, Diagnostics, and Treatments.” His future endeavors include developing point-of-care diagnostics for precision medicine and engaging in evidence-based teaching and mentoring that help advance the field and address inequities in academia and in society at large.
