From the Dean

Greetings from Purdue.

You may have noticed a slight change to the design of the Impact Online homepage with this edition. I would draw your attention to the new horizontal bar above our four photographic pillars. For this edition, and many to come, it will take you to the latest news on our college’s strategic growth initiative. This time, you will read about our very big news on the newly named “Preeminent Teams.” I invite you to read about our novel approach to naming them, and the astoundingly high potential their research holds to produce world-changing results.

I am also delighted to introduce to you the new faculty we have welcomed into the college. Each year, as a new group of faculty joins us, it is a thrill to see the fresh possibilities for enhanced student learning they bring, and the exciting new knowledge their research portends.

And, as always, we share a small glimpse at a couple of examples of our exciting research. You’ll read about the “real-life hybrid simulation” to test a damping system that holds promise for reducing earthquake damage and injuries, and about the exciting ground being gained in the quest for improved therapies for Parkinson’s and other diseases, due to newly captured images and measurements of changes in a protein in the brain. 

Lastly, Patricia Galloway’s story reaffirms the importance of a message our college eagerly shares with girls and young women every day — that engineering represents all sorts of exciting and rewarding career possibilities, many they may never have imagined.
