From the Dean

Leah H. Jamieson

In this edition of Engineering Impact online, there is much to celebrate. Rakesh Agrawal, the Winthrop E. Stone Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama in a White House ceremony Oct. 21. The award is the highest honor for technological achievement bestowed by the U.S. government.

Purdue’s team earned second place in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon in September, beating out 17 teams with its INhome solar house, which features net-zero energy consumption. Tours of the home will be given before it’s turned over to one lucky homeowner.

We also are celebrating a remarkable step forward for women in our college. This fall, nearly 31 percent more women enrolled to study engineering at Purdue than last fall. It’s proof positive that more and more, women are engineering the future! I invite you to read all about it.

And finally, we pause to remember Professors James Barany and Robert Squires, who passed away in November. These men received numerous awards for their innovations and will be remembered for their decades of dedicated service to Purdue Engineering students. They will be sorely missed.

Sincerely,

Leah H. Jamieson
The John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering
