About EDRL

The Engineering Design Research Laboratory (EDRL), founded in 2011, develops computational methods for the design of advanced materials, products, and engineering systems. Our research integrates engineering design optimization, artificial intelligence, physics-based modeling, and automation to create reliable, agentic AI-driven design methods.

Current research areas include topology optimization, multidisciplinary and multiscale design, design under uncertainty, surrogate modeling, automated simulation workflows, and design for advanced manufacturing. Applications span vehicle and aerospace systems, energy storage and battery electrodes, sustainable and composite materials, and additive manufacturing.

Our long-term vision is to develop human-supervised engineering agents that can coordinate models, simulations, data, and expert knowledge; adapt design problems as new information becomes available; detect and recover from computational failures; and support better engineering decisions..
