MSE Safety & Equipment Newsletter for September/October 2022

**** Important Upcoming Dates ****

  * September 16: Seminar at 3:30 pm in ARMS 1010 on Hazardous Waste & Sustainability at Purdue with Dr. Robin Ridgway from REM. This will be a very interesting and informative seminar about the "second life" of hazardous waste that is collected on campus. All MSE researchers are encouraged to attend.
  * September 26: MSE 690 "safety refresher" training at 3:30 pm in ARMS 1010 led by Jenni Fifer. More details below.
  * September 27: PUMA Teaching Labs Cleaning Day in ARMS. This event counts for MSE 390 credit and there will be cookies. Contact Cameron Hillsman<mailto:chillsma at purdue.edu> to sign up!
  * October (TBA): ARMS/MSEE "Surprise" Building Inspection by Purdue REM

**** Annual Safety Training Reminder ****
Each academic year, all undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers are required to complete one in-person "safety refresher" training. A list of researchers who have/have not completed the training will be provided to Prof. Bahr and MSE faculty members at the end of the year. The next one will take place in MSE 690 on September 26th.

**** New ARMS Nighttime Restricted Access ****
All College of Engineering buildings including ARMS will be switching from 24-hr open access to open access from 6am-11pm only. All MSE personnel will still be able to access the building during the locked period after 11 pm using the card swipe located on the south atrium door closest to Hampton.

**** Safety Best Practice: "No-No" to Neutralizing ****
Per Purdue REM's latest advice, MSE personnel should not attempt to neutralize any chemical waste prior to disposal (exception: piranha solution). REM technicians are trained to handle strong acids and bases, so neutralization is not necessary prior to waste pickup. Additionally, please do not "sink it" - that is, no solutions of any kind (besides water and soap) are permitted to be disposed of by pouring down the drain. When you are ready to submit your waste to REM for pick-up, here is the link<https://purdue.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eILaSqsoqODWxOl?_ga=2.56459757.732961866.1633541078-1670550762.1627015591> to the online survey.

**** ARMS 2130/2132/2136 First Friday Clean-Ups ****
The MSE Safety Committee in consultation with REM now facilitates monthly clean-up sessions for the Sample Prep / Polishing / Microscopy lab spaces in ARMS (ARMS 2136, 2132, and 2130). These clean-up sessions are in response to lab user feedback from our recent safety survey ("the labs are dirty and disorganized") as well as to the growing number of safety infractions and near-misses that have occurred over the past year in these spaces. As you all know first-hand, it is so much easier, safer, and more fun to complete your research activities in a clean, well-organized lab space. *** All active lab users of these spaces are required to help with 2 clean-up sessions per year, which take place on the first Friday of every month from 3-4 pm. Each session will involve 5-7 lab users as well as Jenni Fifer and Prof. Erk. Checklists are utilized for each lab space to streamline the workflow. The next cleaning session will be Friday, October 7th. To sign-up for this session or any future session, please click here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D49A5AD2CABF5C25-arms

**** MSE Lab Safety Brightspace Course and Website Updates ****

  * The MSE-specific safety training quiz was updated to remove a confusing question and to only make users repeat (re-answer) questions that they missed. You do not need to retake this quiz if you have taken it previously (e.g., when you first joined MSE).
  * "Safety Highlights" are now included on the MSE website. Email mse-safety at purdue.edu<mailto:mse-safety at purdue.edu> to submit your own safety highlight!
