Bolivian Culture Spotlight

Bolivian Independence Day is August 6th and marks the day that the country gained its freedom from Spain after several centuries of occupation.  It was on this day in the year 1825 that the Declaration of Independence was signed.  Each year this national Bolivian holiday locally known as Dia de la Patria is marked with two days of elaborate country wide celebrations centered around the culture and traditions of Bolivia.  Events such as musical and theater shows displaying history, the gains of independence and patriotism are organized on the day.  The main attraction of the celebrations are the magnificent military parades on the 6th.

Also on this day the Bolivian government meets for a special congressional session marking the day with speeches calling for unity and promises of improvement throughout the nation.  The president also addresses the nation on this day.  Originally, the presidential events were only held in Bolivia's capital city, Sucre, but as of 2010 the president rotate cities, eventually visiting every major Bolivian city.
