Training Private Civilian Astronauts and Conducting Suborbital Research Flights
Tuesday, April 22
6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
ARMS 1021
Rodrigo Carvalho Santiago is a research scientist who has worked on various projects related to spaceflight and astronautics. He will be sharing his experience with private astronaut training as well as going on high altitude flights in space environments.
See his full bio below:
Rodrigo Carvalho Santiago has been selected by IIAS to join the Astronaut Scientist Candidate Class of 2018. He reported for duty in 2019 for AST 101. A native of Volta Redonda- RJ – Brazil he has performed two high attitude flights in space environment conditions with the need for an IVA suit.
He was a researcher and advisor for the MIT / T.E.S.S (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) DATA ANALYSIS TESS GI Program lead by Padi Boyd at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
During quarantine he was part of the Folding at Home team creating the infrastructure to create a supercomputer through peer-to-peer networking. In March 2020, the network had a more powerful processing volume and speed than the world’s top 7 supercomputers combined.
Rodrigo also joined a team to provide solutions for NASA Human Landing System project for the new generation of toilets in lunar, martian and orbital environments.
Director of NMMS 1 (National Manned Stratosphere Station Program) where his project involves the construction and operation of the NMSS-1 (National Manned Stratosphere Station), which can accommodate 6 to 8 crew members. The station will carry out research and experiments near the lower mesosphere for up to 8 days at the edge of space.
He was one of the chosen by UNITY for the development of applications for META QUEST 2 focused essentially on photo realistic simulations of Space, Lunar and Martian missions, where through his long experience as analog astronaut he can contribute to the reduction of errors in long distance missions.
Wheel RIISE
Saturday, April 26
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
West Lafayette Junior/Senior High School
In 2025, RIISE is hosting Wheel RIISE where the organization hopes to include other universities across the Big Ten and Midwest. They are hoping to connect multiple universities to join the cause to raise awareness for adaptive sports. At the event, engineering and athletics will be dually highlighted.
Along with the engineering aspect, we will also host wheelchair basketball exhibition games with participation from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign as well as the local Lafayette Spinners. The goal of this event is to share the talents of adaptive sports athletes with the community at large, highlight the connection between engineering and athletics, and foster inner-collegiate support for the cause amongst Midwest universities. With direct support from Purdue’s College of Engineering and Athletic’s Department, RIISE is excited to host this collaborative event!

MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE
Greetings from the CARES Hub!
We have 2 weeks of class remaining followed by finals…and then…summer break!
As you take on the challenges of the final weeks of the school year, we encourage you to focus on your wellness. Remember that taking care of yourself not only makes you feel better physically and emotionally, but also enhances your academic success! Each week from now through finals we will suggest a weekly well-being activity. We encourage you to engage in that activity 2 – 3 times per week and reflect on how you feel following the activity.
Week 1: March 23 – March 29, 2025
Creative Expression
Engage in a creative activity like coloring, drawing, painting, writing, or playing music to relieve stress and release pent up emotions.
Week 2: March 30 – April 5, 2025
Digital Detox
Reflect on your relationship with your mobile phone. How many hours per day do you spend using it? We often complain of not having enough time. Is your mobile phone usage depleting your quality time? Try silencing your phone for a while…even just 30 minutes a day to completely disconnect and savor a conversation with a friend, a nap, a cup of coffee, gym time, a walk, or anything that you enjoy, and leave your phone unused.

Week 3: April 6 – April 12, 2025
Sufficient Sleep
Sleep is essential to your ability to think clearly, retain facts and information, make decisions, and solve problems. Your sleep-deprived brain is not a high functioning brain. This week, see how many nights you can sleep for 7 – 9 hours. You will feel better, and your brain will work better too!
Week 4: April 13 – 19, 2025
Choose Healthy Eats!
Bags of McDonald’s combo meals have been appearing quite a lot recently around the CARES Hub. Could it be the lure of the Minecraft toys? 😊 Treats are enjoyable on occasion…who doesn’t love McDonald’s fries? Try to think of your daily intake of food as fuel for your brain. As final projects and exams are looming, your brain needs quality fuel for maximum output. Fuel your brain with lean proteins, fruits, veggies, and a few grains thrown in for fiber and energy.
Week 5: April 20 – 26, 2025
Move Your Body!
Did you know that exercise releases “feel good” chemicals in your body like Endorphins and Dopamine? Endorphins are natural painkillers and mood elevators and contribute to that “runners high” feeling for example. Dopamine is often called the “happy hormone” and helps the brain associate exercise with a pleasurable experience which in turn encourages more physical movement. So, head to the gym, hop on your bike, or go for a nature walk. Just get your body moving to release those “feel good” feelings!
