Emergence: A biweekly newsletter of discovery, education, and outreach from the EMBRIO Institute

Issue 12: February 1, 2023

DIRECTORS’ NOTE

February is Black History Month. There are many local and national events you can participate in to learn about the history of the generations of African Americans who have faced extraordinary adversity to achieve citizenship in American society. The blackhistorymonth.gov<https://blackhistorymonth.gov/> site is a good resource to start with. Please check out and participate in your university’s events. Today, Feb. 1, is Imbolc<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imbolc>, Celtic Quarter Day – also known as Saint Brigid’s Day – halfway between winter solstice and spring equinox. We are getting more daylight each day now, right? Then, Feb. 2, is Groundhog Day<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Groundhog_Day> (and the movie<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/> ; Punxsutawney Phil’s predictions are historically worse than expected with random chance, thus we can always hope for an early spring)…Okay, on to the many activities happening in EMBRIO the next few weeks:

Next Monday the 6th Weekly Update will be devoted to a meeting with the Thrust and Site Leaders only, and the following Monday the 13th will feature a research talk by Priyanka Baloni, Ass’t Prof., Health & Human Sciences, Purdue. Feb. 20th we will have the third session of the Grant Writing Professional Development series with students and postdocs (details forthcoming).

In addition to the journal club guided by Jeremy Zartman and Linlin Li, Norma Perez is organizing a new journal club focused on calcium imaging techniques that will begin this month. The culminating goal is to co-write a review paper about these techniques and methods. Links and instructions for participating are found below. Please start by completing the online scheduler<https://www.when2meet.com/?18480121-2rqyo> for when you can meet.

Calling postdocs and undergrads to help lead student efforts through the newly formed EMBRIO Student Leadership Council. The SLC is in the early stages with graduate trainees organizing the council. Learn about how to get involved in the SLC section below.

New Calcium Imaging Techniques Journal Club – Starting this Month!

Due to the need within our EMBRIO community to process and analyze Ca2+ Images, Director Umulis has proposed to discuss papers regarding methods and tools for analyzing calcium imaging as part of a new journal club. The goal is to write a review paper about these techniques and methods.

Norma Perez (nperezro at purdue.edu), EMBRIO Postdoc with the Buganza-Tepole and Umulis Labs, is leading the effort to organize this journal club. In order for the community to join the discussion, please complete the when2meet. To set a time when most of the members can join the discussion, please let Norma know your availability through this link:

https://www.when2meet.com/?18480121-2rqyo

We will discuss the following papers:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uESi45Zv_kGL369NW8sPW60GByOAXme7-vr1XKBM18U/edit?usp=sharing

Students and postdocs, please select a paper you want to discuss and let Norma know your selection. She will add your name to this Google Sheet in order that the community knows the rotation.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RQOTEIncii3HlRaUK38sP8EpOmAeuAc5jP6wR4X7F98/edit?usp=sharing

The presenter will prepare a presentation of the paper and lead the discussion during the meeting for about 1 hour.

Since the goal is to write a review paper, Norma is asking for each presenter to write a short 2-3 sentence summary, and I will add your text in the summary column of the spreadsheet.

On Google Sheets, you will also find a worksheet tab called “Tool Attribute Table”, the aim is to fill out that table through the discussion as a basis for the writing process. We can discuss the structure and the content of the Table in our meetings.

Also, if you want to add an additional paper to the list, please let Norma know.

MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT: Abbie Rogers
[cid:a972fe80-d35e-4636-91f1-a02ff7c6f7c3]
Abbie at the immersive Van Gogh art exhibit in Indianapolis

Abbie Rogers is a Ph.D. student in the Iyer-Pascuzzi Lab, Botany and Plant Pathology Department at Purdue University. The title of her research project is “A Ralstonia solanacearum type III effector alters the cytoskeleton of tomato cells”.

What's your hometown, State, Country (and one thing you love, miss, remember, or want to tell others about it)?
Madison, WI
Madison is great because it is super friendly to pedestrians and there is always something to do! I miss being able to kayak on the lake during the summer and sit with friends at the memorial union terrace. If you’re ever in town I would HIGHLY recommend stopping by Chen’s Dumplings and Paul’s Pelmeni, some of my Madison favorites.

What are your hobbies?
Reading, I especially like science fiction and mystery novels. I also have recently gotten in to puzzles, which is very fun but takes up a lot of space on my dining room table.

What drew you into becoming a scientist or engineer (or both)?
In high school I remember really learning about GMOs for the first time and thinking “That is so cool”. Since then, I knew I wanted to work on making agriculture more sustainable. However, it wasn’t until my undergraduate research experience, where I worked on the genetic basis of Soybean Cyst Nematode resistance in soybean, that I realized I wanted to work in plant sciences at a genetic and molecular level.

Tell us the main point of your research as it relates to EMBRIO:
Our research focuses on understanding how a virulence protein from the bacterial plant phytopathogen Ralstonia solanacearum influences cytoskeletal organization and calcium signaling.

You find yourself alone on an elevator with the president of your university – who knows very little about your field: They ask you to tell them about your research (15 seconds - go!):
I study virulence proteins, known as effectors, from the bacterial phytopathogen Ralstonia solanacearum. This pathogen is super important to study because it causes Bacterial Wilt Disease in a large amount of crop species all around the world. We need to better understand how this pathogen uses its virulence proteins in order to generate better management strategies for Bacterial Wilt Disease.

What's on the horizon for you (research, career, personal, whatever you want to share)?
Right now I am just trying to get through my prelim! But my long-term goal is to stay in academia and become a professor at an R1 university.

What’s your various URL/social media handles that others can follow (prof. website, twitter, LinkedIn, blog, etc)?
