Subject: [Cce-faculty-list] TA Orientation/Training - Fall 2024

Hello CCE Faculty,

Per CCE policy, all students employed as a Teaching Assistant are to attend TA training. The Orientation (TAOR) will be a hybrid model, part in-person and part online. A significant change from previous years is that there will be no on-campus plenary sessions or workshops. Instead, the in-person portion of the program will shift to be a drop-in structure for those graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) who would like more personalized guidance, with a more robust online resource offered on Brightspace.

In-Person Drop-In Times: Wed., Aug. 14, and Tues., Aug 27, 9 a.m.-noon, Stewart Center 278. GTAs may stop by at their convenience during these hours.

This is an optional opportunity for new GTAs to ask questions and get advice as they prepare for their first teaching experiences at Purdue. Staff from the Center for Instructional Excellence will be available to address questions about delivering content, facilitating discussions or labs, grading and providing feedback, etc. Other representatives from Innovative Learning will be on-hand to answer questions about the Brightspace learning management system and other educational technologies.

Online: TAOR 2024 Brightspace

The online component of our hybrid orientation is a self-paced, asynchronous curriculum on Brightspace. Modules will provide GTAs with guidance on creating effective and inclusive learning environments, operationalizing their role as a GTA, navigating their teaching context, and professional development resources and opportunities available to them at Purdue. The information in this Brightspace will be available to registered GTAs during the entire 2024-2025 academic year.

Also, please remember that international students being offered a TA must pass the Oral English Proficiency Test (OEPT) before being able to begin their duties. Stacy has already reached out to you about getting international students scheduled for the OEPT; so, if you have additional names, you can let either of us know.

If you have incoming or returning students that may be serving as a TA during the 2024-25 year, please send me their names as soon as possible. The list is due to the Center for Instructional Excellence tomorrow (sorry for the late notice, I’ve been out of the office the last two weeks). It is helpful if you also provide the course you anticipate them TAing for.

Thanks,

Jenny
