Reminder of Buddy System
Please remember that working in a fume hood after normal working hours (5:00 pm to 7:00 am every week day, and all hours on the weekends) requires using our "Buddy System" for safety.  This Buddy System is defined as having at least one additional person in the same vicinity as the person working in the fume hood.  For example, working in a cleanroom fume hood requires a second person to be somewhere in the cleanroom;  working in a lab fume hood requires a second person to be in that particular lab.  Please make sure you follow this important safety practice.

Vacuum/Process Equipment System Training
A user suggested we provide online vacuum training for common vacuum operation.  We believe this is an excellent idea and we're working to extend this to other systems as well.  In fact we're just starting to develop some video materials for several systems that will be put online and included as part of the specific equipment training.  Watch for these in the future as we get them developed, debugged, and launched.

Evaporator Contamination
As a reminder please do not use any flexible/organic substrates in any e-beam evaporators except the Airco and Varian.  These two systems are dedicated for organic substrates but using organics in any other system causes severe contamination and requires extensive cleaning to get them back to depositing pure films.  Please see these two pictures of flaking taken from the PVD Evaporator where organic substrates were used:

This level of contamination not only causes significant down time for the evaporators but also can severely degrade the performance of devices of other groups expecting clean films.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Lorraine Fox will be expanding her office hours from 1-2 pm daily for students wishing to purchase supplies.

Dear Fellow Scientists,
The 3D Cell Culture Core (3D3C) facility is proposing a first hands-on training workshop for visualization of 3D cell cultures on November 17 and 18, 2016. The workshop will cover some basic techniques for immunolabeling and dye staining and microscope observation of live and fixed 3D cell cultures.  For details on the content, please see below and the flyer attached.
The prerequisite for the workshop is REM biosafety training and blood-borne-pathogen training; sufficient knowledge in basic cell culture techniques is recommended. If you are interested in the workshop, please contact me for information and registration. The workshop is limited to SIX participants.  The deadline for registration is October 28, 2016.
