The technologies of neural networks and fuzzy systems have undergone explosive growth in the past few years. However, each field has developed independently of the other. Each has its own nomenclature and symbology. Although, on the surface there is little that is common between the two fields, they actually share deeper characteristics and are being integrated in many applications. Many recent books deal with fuzzy logic and neural networks independently; many of them are quite mathematical and difficult to read, especially for practicing engineers and scientists in industry. There are few books available that deal with these two topics in an integrated way with an integrated approach to the two technologies.

FUZZY AND NEURAL APPROACHES IN ENGINEERING is one of the first books to integrate the technologies of fuzzy logic systems and neural networks. It is expected that this book will provide engineers and scientists at the first year graduate/senior level, as well as practicing engineers and scientists in industry with the necessary information to enable them to work in this integrated area. The level of mathematics required is that associated with a baccalaureate degree in engineering or science. Previous experience in neural networks and/or fuzzy systems is not assumed. Numerous detailed examples, often using graphical methods, illustrate the principles discussed. Additional examples using MATLAB (Student Edition) to generate neural networks and fuzzy systems will be available via the John Wiley & Sons page on the Internet.
