CE 297 – BASIC MECHANICS I: STATICS – Spring 2002

Beer and E.R. Johnston Jr., “Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics,” Sixth
Edition, McGraw Hill, New York, 1996.
Attendance: Students are expected to attend all classes and
examinations. Attendance will be taken at each class.
Homework: Students are expected to read the textbook
sections corresponding to each class meeting prior to each lecture. See
attached schedule.
Problem sets (3 problems) will be assigned each
class period and will be due at the beginning
of the second following class meeting.
Fifty percent credit will be given for homework submitted up to 24 hours
late.
No credit will be given after 24 hours. Engineering paper should be
employed and all diagrams and calculations must be neat to receive credit. All
necessary steps in arriving at the solution must be given. Make sure multiple
pages are secured properly.
Exams: Two midterm exams and a final exam will be
administered. Tentative midterm exam dates are: February 13th and March 25th. Fifty-minute midterm exams are
scheduled during the normal class time. The final exam will be administered
during finals week. No make up for final
examination is allowed. Make-up for
mid-term exams will only be administered in extreme situations and under
consent prior to the scheduled exam date.

behavior is expected of every student during exams.
Grading: Final
Grade = Homework + Attendance (20%) + Midterm #1 (25%) + Midterm #2 (25%) +
Final Exam (30%).
Final Grade Scale: A =
85-100; B = 75-84; C = 65-74; D = 55-64; F < 55
Grievances: One may contest homework or exam grades in
writing only. An explanation of the
error along with the item in dispute must be submitted in the first class
meeting following the return of the homework or exam.

Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30 to 9:30am, anytime the door is open, or by
appointment.

Help Sessions: Optional
help sessions beginning Monday, January 14 are tentatively scheduled at
6:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday or Wednesday.
The locations will be announced later.
Others may be held also if sufficient interest exists. The class will be poled to determine the
level of interest. As a minimum one
session will be held within one week prior to each midterm exam.
