Service and Outreach

Dr. Peeta’s contributions to service and outreach have been in terms of serving or leading committees at Purdue University and in government and professional organizations. Outreach efforts also include chairing conferences and presentations to professional and government organizations.

  • From 2007 to 2013, he served as the Chair of the Transportation Network Modeling Committee (ADB30) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies. This committee typically reviews the largest numbers of papers for the TRB annual meetings. Papers accepted for publication by this committee (at the rate of 15-19%) have an impact factor of over 2.0. Based on initiatives launched by Dr. Peeta as the committee chair (creating a sub-committee on practice of network modeling, and initiating an effort to create a Primer for Dynamic Traffic Assignment), the ADB30 Committee received the 2013 Blue Ribbon Committee Award for “contributing to TRB and the Transportation community.”
  • Since 2006, he is serving as the Director of the NEXTRANS Center at Purdue University. In this role, he has structured and initiated several programs for the new Center related to research, education, and outreach. They include an undergraduate summer internship program, research experiences for high school students, Center annual reports, Center newsletters, and research collaborations with minority institutions.
  • He served as the chair of the College of Engineering’s interdisciplinary System of Systems (SoS) Cluster from 2006 to 2009.
  • He served as the chair of the School of Civil Engineering’s Strategic Hiring Plan Committee from 2007 to 2012.
  • In 2006-2007, he led a detailed 8-month effort involving input from Purdue Civil Engineering faculty, Civil Engineering heads from other peer universities, other Purdue faculty, industry, and vision documents from national organizations, to develop a 5-year plan for interdisciplinary/core faculty hires in Civil Engineering.
  • He chaired two conferences organized at Purdue University related to “Integrated Transportation Solutions” and “Transportation Aspects of U.S.-Canada Border Trade” involving participants from universities, government agencies, industry, and professional organizations.
