Note from the author:

The book was a labor of love and would not have been possible without the support of friends, family, and the students at MSOE (who provided many helpful comments while being test subjects). Beginning in the summer of  1999, I developed a seminar with of goal of connecting the material typically taught in senior undergraduate and entry-level graduate classes to the work actually being done in industry. It seemed at the time that most books were primarily theory, or primarily hardware/software, and thus I began writing a "notes pack" to fulfill the goals of my seminar. Since I was also teaching many of the controls theory courses at MSOE during this time, a natural progression began to take place where the hands-on approach to the seminar helped my teaching of the theory, and the teaching of the theory helped my development of the practical material. As the "big picture" began to take form, so did the outline for this book. The book is unique therefore, in that an attempt was made to connect the "theory to the hardware", and it has become an entity by connecting many parts--theory, hardware, software, and design. An appropriate title might include "mechatronics", but most mechatronics texts do not develop the same level of theoretical background. I have come to believe, more and more as time goes on, that the best design often sprouts from the deepest understanding of the theory behind the problem. If all you desire to know is what direction to "turn the knob", this book is probably not for you; however, if you desire to know why a certain tuning change produces a certain output, I hope that this text will get you started in that direction.

Sincerely, John H. Lumkes Jr.
