The opportunity selected during the first phase of this project is to provide a product/service that will educate people on their energy use and identify methods to reduce their energy consumption. The ultimate goal of the product/service is to instill energy saving behaviors in the customers’ lifestyles which will provide them financial savings as well as reduce overall environmental impact. The primary value of this opportunity is to save fossil fuel consumption, which in turn translates to significant financial savings. For example, a product/service that could save an average 10% in home energy use could save annually $20.1 billion, 309 billion kWh of energy, and 250,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent across 111.1 million U.S. households. This estimate is based on the 2005 Residential Energy Consumption Survey performed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
